EU Backs New Disinformation Code to Strengthen Digital Safety

The European Commission and the European Board for Digital Services have officially endorsed the integration of the voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation into the Digital Services Act (DSA) framework. This move establishes the Code as a key benchmark for assessing platform compliance with the DSA.

In January 2025, signatories of the Code—including Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines (VLOPs & VLOSEs) such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok—submitted the required documentation to request its recognition as a Code of Conduct under the DSA.

For the Code to be officially recognized, it must meet specific criteria outlined in the DSA. After conducting separate evaluations, the Commission and the Board issued positive assessments, paving the way for its formal integration.

This integration means that full adherence to the Code may serve as an effective risk mitigation measure for platforms designated as VLOPs and VLOSEs. Additionally, compliance with the Code’s commitments will be reviewed as part of the mandatory annual independent audit required under the DSA, further reinforcing its role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the fight against disinformation.
