The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (Cyber Centre), alongside the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and international partners, has released new cybersecurity guidance addressing content credentials and the integrity of multimedia in the era of generative artificial intelligence (AI). This collaboration includes:
- The Australian Signals Directorate’s (ASD) Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC)
- The United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK)
With the rise of AI-generated content, threat actors can easily manipulate media, making it harder to distinguish between authentic and altered content. These low-cost, high-precision manipulations pose significant risks by distorting reality and undermining trust in digital media.
To combat this, the joint guidance:
- Explores the role of content credentials in preserving media authenticity.
- Highlights the current state of solutions for verifying content provenance.
- Provides best practices for maintaining trusted, verifiable metadata.
- Stresses the importance of widespread adoption of these measures across digital platforms.
By promoting transparency and accountability, this initiative aims to enhance trust in multimedia content and strengthen defenses against AI-driven misinformation.
