In our latest report, we analyze the police-reported cybercrime data in Canada for the year 2022. Using data from Statistics Canada, we provided insights into the number of incidents and the rate per 100,000 population across various provinces and territories in Canada.

Key insights

In 2022, Canada reported 74,073 cybercrime incidents, with an overall rate of 191 incidents per 100,000 population. British Columbia had the highest rate at 343.1 incidents per 100,000 population, followed by Nova Scotia at 308.1. Quebec had the lowest rate at 93, and Prince Edward Island reported a rate of 126.

Ontario had the highest number of incidents (28,013) with a rate of 186.7 per 100,000 population. Yukon had a high rate of 186.5 despite a lower number of incidents (82), which can be mainly attributed to its low population. Western provinces like British Columbia and Alberta showed higher rates compared to eastern provinces, with Alberta at 207.2.

Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan had rates around the national average.

Conclusion

The 2022 data shows significant regional variations in cybercrime rates across Canada. British Columbia and Nova Scotia have particularly high rates, suggesting a need for targeted interventions. Quebec and Prince Edward Island have lower rates, indicating different dynamics or effective measures in place.
