Defending against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks

This is an UNCLASSIFIED document issued by the Head of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (Cyber Centre).

As technology advances, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread. Cybercriminals frequently use these attacks to inflict significant financial, operational, and reputational damage on organizations globally. The primary aim of any DDoS attack is to overwhelm and incapacitate targeted servers, services, or networks by inundating them with malicious traffic from compromised devices or networks.

To effectively combat these threats, it’s essential to implement a defense strategy that enhances your organization’s resilience to DDoS attacks. A crucial component of this strategy is deploying scalable and resilient multilayered DDoS protection solutions. For organizations with limited cybersecurity resources, partnering with a managed service provider (MSP) is a recommended approach. MSPs specializing in cybersecurity offer expertise, advanced technologies, and 24/7 monitoring for early threat detection. They can quickly respond to mitigate attacks and adjust services as needed.

The main goal of this publication is to help your organization reduce the likelihood of DDoS attacks, minimize the impact if an attack occurs, and enhance your overall defense strategy by implementing mitigation measures and learning from past DDoS incidents.

The mitigation strategies outlined in this document will also improve your organization’s overall security posture and resilience.
